Mobile Messenger

a collaboration with the Australian Theatre of the Deaf

A love affair begins on MSN while another ends via an SMS. Lovelorn teens a world apart, cannot speak to one another, and are forced to communicate via online chat sessions and the broken language of SMS. A deaf girl feels backed against the wall as her hands fail to communicate all she feels to her hearing friends. Mobile Messenger is the new experimental multimedia performance by Powerhouse Youth Theatre (PYT) and the Australian Theatre of the Deaf (ATOD).

Under the guidance and direction of artistic directors Claudia Chidiac (PYT) and Caroline Conlon (ATOD), Mobile Messenger brings hearing and deaf youth together in a rare collaboration, as they take on the challenges of working and communicating with each other.

With an impressive cast comprised of 15 young people from across greater Sydney, Mobile Messenger will delve into how technology is profoundly changing the way young people live, think and see the world.

Cutting-edge video installations and minimalist set design have been created by design students from the University of Technology Sydney. Their creative input will reflect and highlight the changing communications landscape and how language, both English and Auslan are being stripped and reformed.
