A co-production by Khoa Do and PYT
In 1980, two teenage sisters board a tiny refugee fishing boat ‘mother fish’, with their uncle in the south coast of Vietnam. They aim to flee the country to meet up with their father in America. In the end, the journey is heartbreaking, as they do all they can to reach land. As the days drift by, water runs out. Everyone dreams of a better future, and they pray to both Jesus and Buddha simultaneously. A young man dives into the water because he can’t take it anymore. The engine is broken, and the boat is drifting – they are all forced to bail water out of the boat. For days on end, all they see is blue ocean and a thong drifting in the sea. Kim secretly wishes that one day, she’ll be married with a loving happy family in California but right now, all Hanh dreams of is a single bowl of pho… their only hope for the future lies in a cloud drifting on the horizon. Will they make it?
