ShortCuts, Western Sydney’s only short film festival for young people is on again as part of the NSW Youth Week celebrations and will take place on the Saturday 4th April 2009.

An initiative of PYT, presented in partnership Rumble Pictures and with the Information and Cultural Exchange. ShortCuts gives young filmmakers from the region the chance to have their films screened and awarded over $6,000 worth of prizes by a panel of professional judges.

Some of whom are well established filmmakers who have lived and worked in Western Sydney.

George Basha – Actor/Writer/Co-producer of the film upcoming feature film The Combination. George hails from the West, spending his youth in Parramatta.

Serhat Caradee – Director/Writer/Actor/Co-producer of the upcoming feature film – Cedar Boys. Serhat grew up in Blacktown.

Belinda King – Actor/Writer/Director and multiple Tropfest award winner for her films The Sister and The Picnic. Belinda studied at the University of Western Sydney and is a graduate of the Theatre Nepean.

ShortCuts is open to films that have been made by young people 26 years and under, who live, work or study in Western Sydney. The films cannot be longer than 7 minutes and cast and crew also need to have a connection to Western Sydney.

ShortCuts has given many young people the opportunities to establish themselves as filmmakers. Timothy Ly, Winner of “Best Film” in 2005 says, “I was shocked that my film had won. Film making for me was just for fun but after that it gave me the confidence to pursue it even further. From then on my parents became less worried and started to believe that I could make films.”

Timothy Ly has then gone on to founding the emerging film collective Rumble Pictures; producing Australia’s first Martial Art Feature film Maximum Choppage 2 and an ABC JTV series, Downtown Rumble.

ShortCuts is an integral part of the Fairfield Youth Week celebrations and is proudly supported by Fairfield City Council.

The deadline for submissions is 5pm, Friday 20th March. To obtain an entry form phone PYT on 9724 6077, email shortcuts(AT)pyt.com.au
