Journey-from-the-Fall_165k

DISCUSSION FORUM: Film-making in the Vietnamese diaspora

Team Vietlish: Joseph Hieu Dinh & Maria Tran presents a night of film screening celebrating the emerging Vietnamese film industry both local and internationally.

The night began with the screening of digital storytelling projects made from recent community project, Vietnamese Stories & Vietnamese Storycubes. These are short video clips made by a number of Vietnamese youths living in Western Sydney, focusing on culture and identity.

Then an awesome discussion forum led by Vietlish regarding the current trends of the Vietnamese diaspora film industry, particularly focusing on recent films, The Rebel (Charlie Nguyen), Passport to Love (Victor Vu) and Footy Legends (Khoa Do). There were comments from these directors about filmmaking and their advice to emerging artists- to read these visit- http://vietlish.com.au/

Special feature for the night was the screening of Journey from the Fall (Vuot Song). This film was directed by Academy Award winning nominee Ham Tran (‘The Anniversary’) and acknowledged with more than 14 awards. Inspired by actual events, this Vietnamese (with English subtitles) film follows one family’s post-Vietnam war struggle for freedom. Stars Long Nguyen, Diem Lien and renowned international actress Kieu Chinh (‘Joy Luck Club’).

Joseph Hieu Dinh said: “This will be a great opportunity to discuss about the current market and how film acts as a medium that empowers storytelling, thereby encapsulating history, cultural and identity issues.”

Maria Tran said: “In the recent years there’s been an explosion of independent Vietnamese films around the globe that has received widespread attention and accolades awards. It’s exciting to see such success amongst independent and culturally diverse film makers who went against the grain.”

Bleedthrough (80 mins, Psycological Thriller/ Film Noir)

A man struggling with paranoid schizophrenia suffers from relentless nightmares. But where do the dreams end and reality begin? And when he believes he is being followed by a dangerous cult, is it all in his head?
Completed in only six months, filmed entirely in one week, with a two man crew, Bleedthrough is an experiment in filmmaking. Two Australian filmmakers break the craft down to its bare essentials and set out to make a feature length film with no money, no crew and only the most basic equipment. Persuading other actors to join them voluntarily for the supporting roles, Bleedthough writer/director Daniel James Millar and writer/star David WR Rule have surpassed technical limitations and utilised innovative storytelling techniques to bring their unique vision to the screen.
This is the first of our three Australian Case studies. Looking at how to make a feature film with different revenue streams and audiences. NOT TO BE MISSED! JULY 24- 7Pm – Fairfield School of Arts

FILMMAKER BIOS
DANIEL JAMES MILLAR – Director/Co-writer- Daniel James Millar’s films have been seen by audiences in Australia, Europe and the United States. He has received accolades both at home and abroad for his short films, music videos and television commercials. His career as a filmmaker began to take off when, in 2004, his film Slumber Party was awarded second place at the Salem International Horror Film Festival. His short, “My Grandfather’s Funeral: A Feelgood Comedy About Death In The Family” was nominated for an IF award. Last year, his award winning documentary Cyborg, an impressionistic look at children living with cancer, was invited to screen in the Reel Lives Film Festival in Geneva and at the National Convention of Oncologists in Chicago. He now works as a creative producer at Foxtel’s The World Movies Channel. Bleedthrough is his feature film directorial debut.

DAVID WR RULE – Actor/Co-writer- David Rule is a 29 year old politics student, who has been experimenting with filmmaking since his early teens. During this time he has specialised in the roles of writer and director but is also an accomplished actor, becoming a sought after commodity to student and aspiring filmmakers for short films and amateur features. In 2004 David starred in Slumber Party, an award winning horror film which was screened both at home as well as the United States. Creator of several short films (including the controversial ‘Necro’) David has developed an unconventional storytelling method and is often praised for his minimalist style of guerrilla filmmaking. His latest project, Bleedthrough, is his first foray into feature film developed with long-time collaborator Daniel James Millar, with whom he developed the acclaimed short film The Beginners Guide To Urban Philosophy which has gained fans worldwide since its publication on the internet in 2005.
